Try a little bit of lip chap on your nicks to stop the bleeding instantly.

Lip chap acts as a coagulant that stops bleeding quite immediately. If you don't have lip chap, you can also use Vaseline. If you don't have Vaseline, you can use masking clay and if you don't have that either, then good ole' ice will do, except a little slower.
